How Much Does a Will Cost in the UK?

A single Will, mirror Wills for a couple, or a Will with a trust: what changes the price, and why the cheapest option is often the most expensive in the end.
The cost of a Will depends on how complicated your circumstances are, not on how long the document is. A straightforward Will leaving everything to a spouse and then to children is quick to prepare. A Will involving a business, a second family or a trust takes real drafting.
What affects the price
- A single Will, or mirror Wills for a couple, which are usually cheaper per person
- Whether a trust is needed, for example to protect a share of the home or to provide for a vulnerable beneficiary
- Whether inheritance tax planning is involved
- Blended families, estranged relatives or anyone likely to bring a claim
- Business or agricultural assets, or assets held abroad
- Whether you also want lasting powers of attorney prepared at the same time
The cheap options, and what they cost you later
Online templates and unregulated Will writers are inexpensive at the point of sale. The problems appear afterwards: incorrect witnessing that invalidates the Will, wording that is ambiguous about who gets what, a gift to someone who has died, or no thought given to tax. Disputes of this kind routinely cost estates many times what a properly drafted Will would have.
Be cautious too about arrangements where the Will is free or heavily discounted on the condition that the provider is appointed as executor. Those appointments can be expensive to unwind and the executry fees are usually charged as a percentage of the estate.
Storage and updates
Ask what happens after signing. We tell you where your Will is stored and what a future change will involve. A small amendment can often be dealt with by a codicil, though where there are several changes a fresh Will is usually cleaner and no more expensive.

- Review it every three to five years and always after marriage, divorce, a birth, a house move or a significant change in your finances. Marriage revokes an existing Will unless it was made in contemplation of it.
